Branch President, John Small, welcomed both members and visitors to this the first technical lecture of the new presidential year, before handing over to Simon, John introduced ICME Chief Executive Tim Baron to the meeting, congratulated him on his appointment and pledged the wholehearted support of Branch and Branch Council. The Past Presidents badge was presented to Adrian Aspley with the meeting applauding to acknowledge the excellent year that was had during Adrian’s term in office. The final formal duty was the presentation of the Kevin Cartwright award for the paper considered by Branch Council to have been the best during the 2013 – 2014 year. The award was given to David Yair and Kevin Smith of Voxeljet for their paper on 3D printing for foundries.
Formal duties over the President introduced Simon Alexander who was giving a lecture on the Challenges of making an ultra large steel casting.
Simon began by stating that whilst any company should pay close attention to health and safety, Sheffield Forgemasters special circumstances of having large volumes of liquid metal, deep moulding pits and many other hazards associated with producing ultra large castings require health and safety measures to be the first and foremost consideration at all times.
