Slovakia Steel Mills (SSM)
is planning to produce engineering steel grades round bars next year.
The company is trying to enter the higher value product market because
the local rebar market is over supplied and profitability suffers.
The
mill will stop its melt shop in April 2014 to modify its casting facility using
SMS Concast equipment in order to produce high quality billet. At the same time,
the rolling mill will be upgraded.
Currently, the mill’s higher value
threaded bar is mostly shipped to Saudi Arabia for a long-term contract.
Therefore, the company is planning to sell the engineering steels to the Saudi
market since they can get better profit.
